BeachGroomer Open Beach

The BeachGroomer System is a revolutionary lake weed control device that clears weeds in a 15 foot diameter area. Even better - the lightweight Colman BeachGroomer is portable. It can easily be moved so folks can now clean their entire swimming area.

The BeachGroomer works on water-power. It attaches to a minimum 1 horsepower lawn pump (not included but available) to propel two seven foot arms engineered with chains that churn and turn to clear the beach of weeds and debris. An easy to add option offers lake home owners a fabulous fountain. The fountain comes with two interchangeable nozzle heads. The blossom head fountain adds beauty to a lake front and the aeration nozzle actually adds oxygen to the water to help reduce stagnation and floating lake debris.

The portability is great for moving it within your beach or over to the neighbors. But at 20 pounds - it is so easy to move it in an out of the lake as the seasons change and storage is easy. If you use it at the cabin - its easy to put it inside while you are away!

About the Pump

The BeachGroomer is powered by the powerful 1 h.p. Monarch Lawn Pump. This rugged commercial-grade cast iron pump delivers up to 72 gallons per minute. Recognized as one of the leaders in the industry, Monarch pumps have earned a reputation of reliability and quality.  Also included in the pump package is the Big Foot Lake Filter.  All components are color coded for quick assembly (less than 30 minutes from the time you open the box!)

Lake filters and screens tend to become clogged if not cleaned routinely. This results in loss of pump pressure. The Big Foot's unique design allows your pump to operate efficiently while requiring little or no cleaning.  Made of heavy duty PVC plastic and stainless steel, the Big foot will give you many years of service. Also included is a durable PVC stand to keep the Big Foot elevated from the lake bottom.  As an added bonus, when you aren't running your BeachGroomer, you can use your pump to water the lawn. For an additional $30 purchase the fire hose attachement and power wash your boat and dock with incredible force!

The BeachGroomer is unique from all other weed control devices:  It is portable and requires no electricity at the water (we think that is an important saftey factor). The BeachGroomer is the only free standing unit on the market and weighs less than 20 pounds. It can be easily wheeled around your entire swimming area and because it comes with 100' of flexible 1 1/2" hose it offers a wide range of mobility. It costs considerably less than other weed control devices that require electricity at the dock where they are mounted for the season.

As with any weed control device in Minnesota, owners must obtain a permit from the M.N. Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The permit costs $35 and is good for one to three years. For other states, check with your state Department of Natural Resources for weed control guidelines.

Using your BeachGroomer

The ideal time to begin using your BeachGroomer is by Memorial weekend, before weeds have had time to really grow. If you begin treatments past mid-June, you may need to rake the weeds from your beach before using your BeachGroomer. The BeachGroomer will not function if placed in dense weed growth.

After assembling your BeachGroomer, place the unit in your permitted treatment area. Turn your pump on and open the valve on the hose to the BeachGroomer. The arms should begin to turn. Make sure the arms turn freely and are not interrupted by obstructions on the bottom. If the arms do not turn, please clear the arm path of obstructions.

To properly clean your permitted area, it may be necessary to run the BeachGroomer up to eight hours continuously before moving it. It is important to monitor your BeachGroomer during this initial treatment to ensure the arms turn freely - the motion of the chains can unearth sticks or other debris that can impede proper function. Should the chains become heavy with weeds, please remove the weeds and dispose of them properly.

When you see that your area is free of weeds and the sand is exposed, you can then move your BeachGroomer to another area that you would like to clean. The amount of sediment on your beach bottom will determine the amount of time the BeachGroomer will run in one spot.

Once you have cleaned your entire area, ruPn your BeachGroomer as needed to eliminate new weed growth. You will find that as the summer progresses into late July and August, the need to run your BeachGroomer diminishes as weed-growth diminishes. You may wish to convert your BeachGroomer to a fountain only unit.

For best grooming results, do not run your fountain during initial treatment as this will decrease the water pressure required to turn the arms of the BeachGroomer.

PREPARING YOUR BEACH FOR THE BEACHGROOMER SYSTEM

Depending on the condition of your beach, the amount of muck or weed growth, preparation can range from none to quite a bit. The optimum time for installation is on or before Memorial weekend. This is before significant weed growth has begun. If your beach has less than 3" of sediment and is relatively debris free (such as sunken limbs, logs, clumps of dead weeds, etc.) no prep work is required. However, if you have a beach which has not been used for swimming or has had little boat activity or has bull rushes, cat tails or lily pads then some prep work is required.

Begin by removing sunken debris from your permitted area. Anything that would obstruct the path of the chains on the arms of the BeachGroomer. In early spring when the water is clear you will see this debris. The good news is you only have to do this once.

If lily pads are present in the permitted area this is usually an indication of a soft bottom. However, in early spring the lily pads have not yet grown but their rhizome root structure is well established. These tubular roots can be raked free of the bottom. Once freed these large roots will float. Please dispose of these properly and only remove these roots in your permitted area. As mentioned earlier there is very little weed growth before June but there may be dead weeds from the previous summer still rooted (much like plants in a garden that have died). These should be removed. Light debris such as leaves and small twigs do not need to be removed as the BeachGroomer will sweep them clean.

If you plan to install your BeachGroomer System later than the beginning of June, you will most likely have to rake your area before installation to ensure proper function of the BeachGroomer.

Many beaches require no prep work but even on virgin beaches with the proper preparation one can have a sandy beach and the bonus is after the first season of using your BeachGroomer the following seasons require no prep work.
